Picture: 1971 - Wolfsburg's Direktor Hoehne presents Beetle number 14,000,000, a 1302 S, to Ivan Hirst (first post-war manager at Wolfsburg) - accepting for Volkswagen UK.


Picture: Feb 17, 1972 - Beetle number 15,007,034, a 1302 S, becomes a 'World Champion' and leaves the Wolfsburg assembly line to break the world production record previously held by the Model T Ford. The 'Marathon' sports wheels model car now is in Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen collection, Wolfsburg.


The basic 1302 front strut assembly design continued on into the '73 1303 models until 1974 when the steering knuckle and its mounting was revised. Rack and pinion steering was introduced for the 1975 models. Illustration courtesy Super Beetles Only!

1302 production ends Julay 72 - replaced with 1303 model August 72.

·         1303 Convertible production continues until January 1980
·         1303 replaced with 'New Beetle' March 1998.
